Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools launches at the National Galleries of Scotland

The Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools 2015 was launched at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh today (29 October), marking the start of a renewed four-year partnership between Tesco Bank and the National Galleries of Scotland.

Every year thousands of children participate in the Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools, taking their inspiration from works in the Galleries’ collections.

Helping to celebrate today’s competition launch, and to highlight one of this year’s eye-catching themes, a group of children from Flora Stevenson Primary School in Edinburgh were photographed in the Gallery with their very own giant shoe, kick-starting some artistic inspiration for nursery-age entrants, who will be looking at ‘Shoes’ in the work of artists such as Andy Warhol.

The Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools was created to inspire young people to use the Galleries’ collections to respond to their surroundings, tell stories and share their lives through art.  Last year there were entries from every area of Scotland - from Inverness to Annan, and Portree to Gullane – and an exhibition of the winning works wowed crowds at the Scottish National Gallery this summer. The exhibition is now about to head out on tour, first showing at the Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock, before moving to the Paisley Museum and Arts Centre.

Tesco Bank’s new four-year partnership with the National Galleries of Scotland will continue to enhance children’s access to visual art through a range of exciting initiatives, including roadshow events that will take the competition out to classrooms across the country. In addition there will be greater opportunities for school groups to visit the National Galleries for special artist-led workshops and a new grant fund to help supply art materials to schools has also been developed.

John Leighton, Director General of the National Galleries of Scotland, said,

“Over the last three years, the partnership between Tesco Bank and the National Galleries of Scotland has enabled the Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools to continue to flourish each and every year. We’re thrilled that Tesco Bank has agreed to support the competition for the next four years.

"One of our main aims is to engage with wider audiences by promoting opportunities for people to learn about the collection and encouraging them to take part in our activities. We look forward to seeing the competition go from strength to strength over the next few years, and the positive impact it will have on school children across the country."

Adele Mills, Community Investment Manager, Tesco Bank, added,

"At Tesco Bank we enjoy the support of the communities we serve.  Each year our grassroots community programme builds skills and confidence and encourages positive habits, helping more than 70,000 children lead healthier, happier lives.

"The renewal of our four-year partnership with National Galleries of Scotland will give tens of thousands of children access to visual arts and the opportunity to express themselves creatively. We are committed to widening accessibility to art and the national collection, and it is for that reason we have introduced newly funded workshops and art material grants to support schools who are participating in the competition for the first time.  This, along with the tour of the winning artwork across the country, will give many more people the opportunity to benefit and enjoy the competition."
