Enjoying a slice of success: John McGinn celebrates international call-up with Tesco Bank Football Challenge

Today (Wednesday 23rd March), was the icing on the cake for Hibs star and new Scotland recruit John McGinn as he returned to his former primary school. John was at St Stephen’s Primary School in Clydebank, to celebrate his premiere call-up to Strachan’s first team with the Tesco Bank Football Challenge.

The former pupil met primary two children – who presented him with a HUGE celebratory cake - as they enjoyed a training session with Scottish FA coaches. The Tesco Bank Football Challenge, in partnership with the Scottish FA, gives children six weeks of in-school coaching to help kick-start a love of the game and promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

John was also interviewed by two primary six students, who grilled the midfielder with a variety of questions submitted by classmates from across the school.

Over 100,000 children from every school in Scotland have now enjoyed taking part in the country’s leading football participation programme.

Tesco Bank’s Community Programme helps more than 70,000 children each year through its partnerships with the Scottish FA, The Reading Agency and the National Galleries of Scotland.

John McGinn said:

“It was great to visit my old school today and see that they are so engaged in the Tesco Bank Football Challenge. Running about, playing football with my pals here was where my love of football began and hopefully this visit shows the kids where that can get you. At their age, the most important thing is having fun with football and instilling the importance of a healthy and active life – although a slice of cake is always OK on special occasions!”

Jim Fleeting, Scottish FA Director of Football Development commented:

“A big part of the Tesco Bank Football Challenge is showing children the positives that come with a healthy and active lifestyle, and it’s fantastic that John McGinn was able to visit the children and demonstrate this today. It’s vital for us to promote the importance of keeping fit and healthy from a young age and our coaches work incredibly hard to do this.”

Adele Mills, Senior Community Investment Manager at Tesco Bank, added:

“Our Community Programme encourages children to develop positive, lifelong habits and have fun whilst doing so we’re delighted that the Tesco Bank Football Challenge could bring John back to his primary school to celebrate his international call-up. John was able to share his love of the game and the importance of keeping fit and healthy with the children. We’re committed to spreading this message across the country and look forward to involving more children in the programme over the next two years.”

John has been called-up to the squad to face Denmark at Hampden Park on Tuesday 29th March, and kids can see him in action for just £5 Visit www.scottishfa.co.uk for full ticket details.

Media colleagues are encouraged to use the line: John McGinn was speaking at the Tesco Bank Football Challenge Festival at St Stephen’s Primary School in Clydebank.  Over 100,000 children have now taken part in the grassroots schools programme.
